Post Election Thoughts (1)
Time to collect some thoughts on the election campaign.

As much as campaign work was intense and tiring, there were many things in our work that lit up our days. One of them was receiving notes and letters from supporters of our campaign.

In Alan's concluding speech on the March 15 debate, he said that "Hong Kong has won." Some people viewed this comment as a premature claim of the contribution this election campaign has made to Hong Kong. "What exactly has Hong Kong won?" Some challenged us.

We are of the view that, first and foremost, this campaign has galvanized new interest in politics in the Hong Kong society.

Not only did we receive letters from individual supporters, but we also received calls from schools asking for our policy platforms, as part of their effort to educate the young about Hong Kong politics. I daresay, if not for Alan's candidacy and the two election debates, this election would probably go without notice by most in Hong Kong.

In mid-February, Alan received a letter from the True Light Middle School:

Dear Mr. Alan Leong,

You were chosen by some of my primary 6 students as the best person to become the next Chief Executive of Hong Kong. As part of a Primary Six English Class assignment my students were to write a letter to the Hong Kong leader of their choice. Enclosed with this covering letter is the best letter written to you.

During this assignment the students spoke in front of the class promoting the different candidates. They also prepared questions for the students speaking and argued about the best choice. (abridged)

Alan forwarded this letter to our office as an encouragement. Kwan Yeung's note reached my desk, and really touched me.

Mr. Alan Leong,
How are you?
I want you to be the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Because you are brave to help the Hong Kong Democrats to join the election victory to open the way to challenge Donald Tsang in next March. Although you only have a little chance of detenting [defeating] Tsang. There at least have a real fight. I think many people will support you.

Yours Sincerely,

Ng Kwan Yeung

To this, Alan replied:
Dear Kwan Yeung,

Thank you very much for your kind letter choosing me to be the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Your delightful words brightened my day.

Your well-written letter gave me the opportunity to learn your thoughts, and I was especially encouraged by your keen understanding of Hong Kong's current affairs. It also gave me great comfort learning that, at this young age, you and your classmates have already developed appreciation for democracy and concern for our society. I am honoured to have your support at this final stage of the Chief Executive election.

Thank you again for your thoughtfulness and support. Last but not least, I wish you the best in your future, which I am sure will be bright and promising.

Yours ever,

Alan Leong

Hong Kong has won, it has won a new culture of caring; its people have won the recognition that the Chief Executive election, as much as it is still a small circle, has relevance in people's daily lives. Hong Kong's youth has won the awareness that, there was one person willing to uphold his visions of Hong Kong, and face up to intense pressure in order to fight for his goals.

The First Luncheon
Last Friday the office gathered for lunch for the first time. Well, not really the whole office, more like 2/3 of the office, meaning Lok, Apple, Nat and Helen. It was probably the most attended office lunch so far, since we all have different schedules and we usually have lunch separately.

We were missing Ian because he had some mysterious "date" and took a *long* lunch without us. He wouldn't say who he had lunch with, "it wasn't that long of a lunch break!"

Speaking of food. None of us knows Sheung Wan too well, so we take it as a nice excursion to seek out restuarant options around here. That's probably the only entertainment we have throughout the day because we stay till late working every day--and that means, we often eat all three meals in Sheung Wan. If we try a new restaurant for each meal, we'd try all the restaurants in Sheung Wan within a month and a half!

The office never goes without food, as Ms. Teacher is always bringing us the best pastries and other snacks. It has become a part of our routine to have a quick afternoon tea--and soon enough the ladies started worrying about the weight effect of this afternoon tea practice. Ms. Helen already gained weight.... But the pastries look so good... to eat, or not to eat?

A Welcome from the Campaign Office!
In this picture you see the faces behind the scene--we are the very dedicated people supporting Alan Leong's campaign operation. Here we welcome you to the campaign diary, in which we upload frequent updates (well, that is, if we are not overwhelmed with the demands of campaigining) of Alan's election activities. You will see a personal aspect of this office as we share our insiders' stories with you.
